Garden with Insight v1.0 Help: How to change command line options

You can use three command line options to change how Garden with Insight starts up. In Windows 3.1 you access the command line by changing an icon's properties (choose Properties from the File menu in the Program Manager), or by typing into the dialog that appears after you choose Run from the File menu in the Program Manager or File Manager.

To create a custom program item to hold your special command line options in the Windows 3.1 Program Manager, choose New from the File menu. In the dialog that appears, choose Program Item and click OK, then in the next dialog type your command line into the Command line edit box and click OK. Specifying an initialization (ini) file

The initialization file determines the files from which information is copied when Garden with Insight starts up. See How to change startup file preferences for details about the initialization file.

The "-i" option can be used to specify either a special initialization file or no initialization file. To use a special initialization file (not the file gwi_kfs.ini in your Windows directory), type "-i=" with the file name on the command line (don't type the quotes). For example, the command line

"gwi16 -i=c:\mygardn\special.ini" will start Garden with Insight with the initialization file c:\mygardn\special.ini.

To use no initialization file, type "-i" on the command line with no file name after it. For example, the command line "gwi16 -i" will start Garden with Insight with no initialization file, and will look for exactly the following files in the directory in which the executable file resides: default.gdn, startup.mid, groups.grp, library.tpl, palette.bmp, and tools.too.

Specifying a garden file

You can specify a garden file to open when you start Garden with Insight by typing the name of the garden on the command line. For example, the command line "gwi16 mygardn.gdn" will start Garden with Insight and open the garden file mygardn.gdn in the current directory.

You can associate garden files with Garden with Insight in your Windows 3.1 File Manager so that when you double-click on a garden file you will start Garden with Insight and open that garden file. To do this, select a garden file (.gdn), then choose Associate from the File menu. In the dialog that appears, click Browse. A standard file dialog will appear; find the Garden with Insight executable file (gwi16.exe or gwi32.exe) in it and click OK. Now when you double-click on any garden file, Garden with Insight will start automatically. (For help on doing this in Windows 95, see your Windows help.)

Turning off the startup music

You can turn off the startup music in the command line, if you don't want to hear the music this time. (See the description of the Options menu and How to change startup file preferences for information about permanent changes to the startup music.) To disable the startup music, type "-m" on the command line. For example, you might want to have two icons that you use to start the program -- one to use when you can make noise, and one to use when you need quiet.
